The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Carleton man after a YouTube video surfaced alleging that he was a sex offender.
The Sheriff’s Office and the Violent Internet Predator and Exploitation Response (VIPER) task force conducted a search warrant at William Minney’s residence on Wednesday after they became aware of the video.
After conducing a search, Minney was taken into custody and lodged at the Monroe County Jail.
On Thursday Minney, 63, was arraigned in First District Court on two felony charges of using a computer to commit a crime and accosting children for immoral purposes. Bond was set at $100,000. If he is released on bond, Minney must wear a GPS enabled tether.
In a YouTube video, a man confronts Minney at an ice cream shop where the suspect worked. The man asked Minney about an alleged meeting with a 14-year-old boy that was arranged on the internet. The confrontation was posted on YouTube.
Carleton Police Chief Roy Johnson praised the sheriff’s office for pursuing the case.
“On behalf of the Carleton Police Department, I would like to thank the members of the community in exercising restraint and affording law enforcement the opportunity to investigate this incident,” he wrote on the CPD Facebook page. “Mr. Minney is currently lodged in the Monroe County Jail due to the outstanding job of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department VIPER Unit as well as Sheriff Troy Goodnough.”
